Job Purpose/Overview


At Lavazza, the coffee Roasting Operator is a key role within the Manufacturing team. This position is responsible for roasting green coffee beans used in the production process. The role of the Roasting Operator is key to the safe operation of the coffee roaster / related equipment, and to maintain quality standards, and coffee specifications.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Oversee and manage all activities related to the import of green coffee into North America
  • Independently operate the tangential coffee roaster
  • Meet safety/quality expectations while roasting in batch and continuous mode operation
  • Operate roaster at agreed efficiency targets of roasting green coffee beans
  • Coordinate all activities in the Roaster area
  • Roast coffee beans according to production schedule; move coffee beans to coffee grinder to stock all coffee packaging lines
  • Work effectively across departments including Quality, R&D, Engineering, Maintenance
  • Communicate machine performance and quality status with Shift Manager, Coffee Scientist, Material Handler (Green Bean) and Maintenance Technician
  • Conduct area inspection regarding Safety and 5S
  • Complete start-up and shutdown operation of the roaster
  • Review roasts to be performed, check blend specification, silo storage and select blend. Set temperature and quench based on blend
  • Direct loading and monitor roasts, record blends, take samples of roasted beans; Ensure roasted beans are sent to correct roast silos
  • Check roasted bean tanks to determine quantity, plan for next blend to be roasted
  • Continue monitoring roasts and roast destination
  • Accurately complete all product quality testing requirements and document in logbooks
  • Monitor scrap level and continuously seek out opportunities to minimize downtime and product quality defects
  • Create standard operating procedures
  • Perform the established clean down and changeover standard operating procedures with an eye towards improving the process
  • Commit to supporting continuous improvement activities and bring creative, innovative ideas to the table
  • Perform operator-level preventative maintenance and assist Maintenance Technician as required
  • Performs other related duties and assignments as required

 

Job Specifications/Qualifications

 

  • 2-year technical degree or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a plant operation or technical role
  • Demonstrate excellent attitude and willingness to learn
  • Ability to continuously learn and apply new methods and techniques
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work in small teams
  • Ability to deal with ambiguous situations; make decisions on fly using appropriate resources
  • Ability to think critically with accurate technical judgment, as well as the ability to communicate this information to others verbally or in writing
  • Understanding of coffee bean bulk density, particle size and roast degree characteristics
  • Knowledge of grinder operation
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs 
  • Must be flexible to all shifts
  • Proven punctuality and attendance record
